From 1768 to Present
Early Years:
Toms River, located in Ocean County, New Jersey, has a rich and diverse history dating back to the 18th century. The area was first inhabited by the Lenni-Lenape Native American tribe, who settled along the Toms River and its tributaries.
Colonial Era:
In 1677, the English colony of East Jersey granted a large tract of land to Daniel Scudder, a prominent settler, who established the town of Toms River. The town was named after the river, which was named after Thomas Rivers, a local settler. During the colonial era, Toms River was a thriving farming community, with many settlers arriving from England and Scotland.
American Revolution:
During the American Revolution, Toms River played a significant role in the war effort. The town was a key supply point for the Continental Army, and many residents fought in the war. In 1778, British troops occupied the town, and it was later retaken by American forces in 1781.
19th and 20th Centuries:
In the 19th century, Toms River experienced significant growth and development, driven by its location along the coastal railroad line and its natural resources.
