In New Jersey, OPRA stands for the Open Public Records Act. It’s a state law that gives citizens the right to access government records maintained by public agencies. OPRA replaces the old “Right to Know Law” and aims to increase transparency and public access to government information.
OPRA was enacted to expand the public’s right to access government records, create an administrative appeals process for denied access, and define what constitutes a “government record”.
Citizens can submit a request for specific records to the relevant public agency. The agency then has a set period (usually 7 business days) to respond, either granting access, denying access (with reasons), or seeking an extension.
